Issue Essay GRE Essays Issue Essay GRE Essay Issue Essay GRE Essay Issue: Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. I firmly reject this statement. While advicing students to consider their own abilites and strenghts when they look for their own career path is commonplace (or even ecommended), I believe the main purpose of educational institutions in this area is different. I think their Job is to present students with the complete spectrum of careers and Jobs available so that they can, by themselves, choose the one that best suits him. Some may argue that people are too young when they make these big, life changing decisions, and they may be right. After all, it may not be realistic that an 18 year old is ready for that kind of responsibility. Maybe we should only guide them towards areas in which they seem apt. But that takes away too much from them; not only is that a great restriction on their free will, it could crush their dreams. If that was the kind of world in which we lived, Albert Einstein may have never become what he did. While in school, Einstein had terrible grades and flunked most of his clases. Had someone seen that and dissuaded him from phisics, we would certainly live in a different world. Possibly one worst off that the one we live in today. What about Lionel Messi? While being a kid, he had growth hormone deficiency, but e is now one of the best soccer players in the world. And this is somenthig that should be treated equally at home; as the famous quote goes: Education starts at home. My fathers family has a marked engineering tradition, speecificaly in civil engineering. When he chose his undergraduate degree, he went with that tradition even if he wasnt quite sure about it. During his college years, he started to get close to computers and found his passion with them. Now he is one of the top computing researchers in M?Ã ©xico. The bottom line is that nothing maximizes ones chances of succes like passion, interest and pleasure in doing what they do. We could always steer children into the jobs and careers that could maximize their posibilities of succes, but would that make them happy? Could we even know accurately what fields of study they could excel and fail in? Maybe, but why would we? The only thing we should do is show them the world and help them find their calling, whatever that may be; it is, after all, their life to live. Issue Essay GRE By favlab

SAT 5-Minute Mess-Up, an Update
SAT 5-Minute Mess-Up, an Update SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips On June 6th, 2015, the College Board made a huge mistake. This mistake resulted in some sections of the test being canceled and forced the College Board to use an abnormal scoring method. To make amends for the mistake, the College Board offered a free retest for June 6th test-takers in October 2015. Whatââ¬â¢s the situation today? How did the retest go? What should you do if you took the June 6th test? Iââ¬â¢ll address all of this and more in this news update. What Wasthe 5-Minute Mess Up? If you know the full story, feel free to skip this section and jump to the update. If you donââ¬â¢t know what happened on June 6th, I encourage you to read our full report on the situation, but here is a brief summary: On section 8 or 9 of the test (depending on your version), there was a typo in the test booklet which said you had 25 minutes to complete the section when in fact you were only allowed 20 minutes (which is what it says in the proctor instructions). As a result of this discrepancy, some proctors gave students 25 minutes for the section while other were given only 20 minutes. Due to the discrepancy, the College Board decided to cancel two sections of the test. They had to change their normal grading curve, which affected the reliability of the scoring. To pacify angry students (some of whom were threatening to sue), the College Board offered a free retest on October 3rd for all students who took the SAT June 6th. However, the College Board still released scores for all June 6th SAT test-takers, and the scores from that test date will still count as an official SAT score. Colleges should judgeSAT scores from June 6th the same as scores from other SAT test dates. In spite of the free re-test, many students and parents are still angry. Samuel Jester, who sat for the June 6th SAT, and his family are trying to file a class action lawsuit against the College Board for students who sat for the June 6th SAT and paid to have their scores verified. They're arguing that the test was not "scored in a consistent and reliable manner." The lawsuit is still pending. Update on the October Retest For those who took the retest on October 3rd, how did they feel? Here are some reactions from students on Twitter: The Good OMG YES IM HAPPY WITH MY SAT SCORE ðŸ⠥ðŸ⠥ðŸ⠥ðŸ⠥ - navigator (@shahrazadxx) November 12, 2015 Just saw my recent SAT score and i am very satisfied with it. ðŸËÅ - Cole Manfred (@Da_Man_Fred) October 30, 2015 Hard work pays off! Raised my SAT score 200pts. im not dumb. #ThankYouJesus - Greggy Wap (@lilsportster) November 2, 2015 The Bad SO GLAD I GOT A LOWER SCORE ON THE SAT YASSS - Gus (@augustagloverr) October 29, 2015 Crying because my SAT score is horrible. - Nina (@nphomphakdy) October 25, 2015 The In-Between LOL WHEN U GET THE SAME SAT SCORE THAT U GOT IN JUNE UGHHHHHH - Clark (@thisisclark) October 29, 2015 my SAT score went up a lot but it still isn't good enough - ï ¸ (@pescadomalo) November 25, 2015 Some Hadnââ¬â¢t Received Their Scores My SAT score reports are still "pending" ok ok - Harry (@harryhudome) November 1, 2015 When will I find out my SAT score The world may never know - Jesse Tompkins (@jessetompkins97) November 1, 2015 This delay was due to an issue with the College Boardââ¬â¢s new electronic system. The issue has since been resolved, and all October 3rd scores were received by test-takers.However, the delay worried many students whoââ¬â¢d applied Early Decision or Early action since many colleges require scores to arrive before November 1st. The College Board worked with college admissions offices on the issue, and many colleges still allowed students to be considered for Early Action or Early Decision in spite of the slightly delayed scores. SAT scores lead to a lot of emotions. What To Do If you took the June 6th SAT, what should you do? Whether you were happy, sad or ambivalent towards your score, I have advice for you! Option #1: Happy with Score from June If youââ¬â¢re happy with your score for the June 6th test, send that score!Colleges should view it the same as any other SAT score.Even if you took the free re-test in October, you could still opt to send the June 6th score.Your June 6th score still counts as an official score. Option #2: Very Unhappy with June Score If you were very unhappy with your June 6th score, you were not alone.I personally sat for that test date and received 760 in Math for one incorrect answer without skipping any questions (which would normally be a 780-800 on another test date). The grading curve was brutal, so many students were unhappy. If you fell into that unhappy group, hopefully, you did the free retest October 3rd, but if not, you should pay for a retest. I highly recommend doing SAT prep to try to improve your score. You could try self-study,tutoring, a class, oronline program; whatever prep path you choose make sure it is personalized to your needs. You need todetermine your areas of weakness andtry to improve in those areas. If you retest and improve your score significantly, you might be accused of cheating. Even if youââ¬â¢re not accused of cheating, your drastic score increase may seem suspicious to colleges (for schools that require all scores sent). I recommend that you use the additional information section of your common appto explain that you were very thrown off on June 6th by the timing confusion and that caused an abnormally low score. Option #3: Okay with June Score If you donââ¬â¢t love or hate your score, if itââ¬â¢s close to your target scorebut not exactly what you wanted, Iââ¬â¢d consider re-testing if you have the time. Hopefully, you took the free October retest and did better, but if not, I suggest you make an effort to prep for your next SAT test either through self-study, tutoring, a class, oronline program. Woman and Social Oppression Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Woman and Social Oppression - Essay Example Even with laws to prevent this sort of treatment of women, we suffer from this deep-rooted system that allows for men to hold a dominant position. The God of Small Things also explores the oppression of women, but it is present in a much more flagrant manner in this novel. Ammu is not even given a chance to succeed in life, as she is not permitted to pursue an education and her only realistic goal in life is to marry someone and do what he wants. When Ammu divorces, she becomes an outcast and she spends the rest of her life waiting to die. These works show that women are oppressed in a variety of ways in different cultures and that gender constructs are causing this oppression. The essay ââ¬Å"Oppressionâ⬠, by Marilyn Frye, examines how women are oppressed in society. Often times, this oppression is not flagrant, but is rather a series of small privileges that are taken away from women in order to benefit other social groups. The author makes the claim that women live within a birdcage, where each of the individual wires is meaningless but when they are all put together, it is impossible for the bird to escape. The oppression of women has two main features, according to Frye. First of all, they are place in positions of power where they hold a great deal of responsibility, but they are not given enough power to effectively use this position. Also, women know that they are limited in these positions of power, so they make sure that they do not exceed the limits that society has placed upon them. The system is in place, according to Frye, to privilege men and oppress women. In Judith Lorberââ¬â¢s essay, entitled ââ¬Å"The Social Construction of Genderâ⬠, the author agrees that the roles of each gender are defined by society and there is very little that can be done to alleviate these constructs. Lorber traces these constructs back to

Vertigo Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Vertigo - Essay Example Scottie is coerced into early retirement due to a duty incident that made him develop acrophobia. Acrophobia is entails very high fear levels of heights. Scottie also develops the vertigo effect, which is characterized by rotational motion and false sensation. Scottie is given the private investigator task by Gavin Elster, to monitor the strange behavior of his wife called Madeleine. The film applied effective techniques for screenplay development. One technique is the dolly zoom technique. Dolly zoom effect involves the in-camera effect which distorts perspective. The distortion aims at illustrating the disorientation effect that adequately communicates the acrophobia condition of Scottie (Sipos 76). The story in the film is communicated through pictures. The rooftop chase that led to the policemanââ¬â¢s death explains the imagery effect of the acrophobia and vertigo effect. The image shows Scottie attempting to manage his fear; however, his friend Midge Woods identifies severe emotional shock as the most appropriate cure for his condition. The attempts to manage the acrophobia and vertigo effect, aims at minimizing related accidents, traumas, fatalities and injuries, which arise from the condition. The screenplay shows Scottie following Madeleine, his wife. Madeleine shows physical and emotional characteristics of a person who is possessed. Scottie reluctantly follows Madeleine to the florist, then to Carlotta Valdesââ¬â¢ grave, and finally the art museum to stare at the Portrait of Carlotta. The mysterious nature of Madeleine is further illustrated when Scottie fails to find her at the McKittrick Hotel. A local historian communicates that the image of Carlotta is mysterious because she committed suicide. Gavin illustrates that Carlotta is the issue possessing Madeleine, and also that Carlotta is the great-grandmother of Madeleine. Dramatics

During the eleven year long Sierra Leonean civil war, reports of systematic sexual violence against women and girls during the war resulted in international concern over a potential ââ¬Ëcrisisââ¬â¢ of HIV/AIDS in the country. In order to manage the imagined impending outbreak, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) in Sierra Leone received $15 million from the World Bank to create the Sierra Leone HIV/AIDS Response Program [SHARP]. In this paper, I point to the work that the global crisis narrative of HIV/AIDS does to shape specific forms of intervention. In Sierra Leone, the global health interventions associated with HIV/AIDS are further targeted at vulnerable populations, particularly war-affected women and girls, who are often framed as both abject victims in need of care (read: at risk) and potential vehicles of HIV/AIDS transmission in need of control (read: risky). In my conclusion, I ask whether the vision of HIV/AIDS vulnerability communicated by SHARP is indica tive of an uneven or differential landscape of health citizenship in post-war Sierra Leone. The contemporary model of global health intervention is rooted in colonial and post-colonial histories of debt, structural adjustment, the devolution of the state and the rise of multilateral aid-driven health development. As Sparke (2013) illustrates, the growing global health industry increasingly relies on a ââ¬Ënew Washington Consensus,ââ¬â¢ which frames improvements in population health as integral to social and economic development in nations of the Global South. Combating ââ¬Ëdiseases of poverty,ââ¬â¢ such as HIV/AIDS, global health interventions often take the form of short-term ââ¬Ëtechnocentricââ¬â¢ solutions that are limited in scope and vertical in implementation (Foley & Henrixson 2... ...ent-funded initiatives act as ââ¬Ëquasi statesââ¬â¢ that produce state-like effects of control, regulation and legitimacy. The involvement of these entities in the creation and implementation of HIV/AIDS policies in Sierra Leone simultaneously disrupts national narratives of health citizenship and creates a global moral politics of intervention (Benton 2012; Kenworthy forthcoming). Through the continued utilization of a crisis model of care to address global health emergencies, the international community perpetuates the mobilization of differential forms of health citizenship that are envisioned at the global scale yet enacted and negotiated in a variety of ways at the national and local scales. In the context of the global health industry, such differential health citizenships are practiced through the prioritization of certain bodies for care to the detriment of others.

Catcher in the Rye Immaturity of Holden Caufield Essay
In J.D. Salingerââ¬â¢s The Catcher is the Rye, the protagonist Holden Caufield emerges from a trying and emotional series of events and does not grow emotionally but remains as immature as he was at the beginning of the novel. The story is about the difficulties of growing up. Most people come out of their teenager years as more responsible and mature people. Holden goes through many stressful events during the weekend, but instead of coming out more mature and grown up, he still has the same childish views on life; he is violent minded, depressed, confused, and irresponsible. Throughout the whole novel, Holden fantasizes about killing people, he is baffled by sex, and he does not think out his actions. During the beginning of the story, Holden thinks about killing people many times. He wanted to kill Stradlater, his roommate, for dating Jane Gallagher, his old friend. Holden knew what kind of guy Stradlater was and he was afraid he took advantage of Jane. Holden actually does fight Stradlater but gets hurt pretty badly. He then puts his hunting hat on and says it is a ââ¬Å"people shootingâ⬠hat. Later on in the story, Holden again thinks about killing people. When Maurice, the pimp, hurts Holden and steals his money, Holden pretends that he had been shot in the stomach and his guts were falling out. He then pretends that he is staggering down the stairs with a gun to shoot Maurice and get revenge. Holden does not actually do this, but it shows how he is immature and violent. Also, while Holden is visiting Phoebeââ¬â¢s school, he sees that someone has written ââ¬Å"fuckâ⬠on the wall. He becomes very angry and wants the bash the skull of whoever did that on the marble floor so they are all bloody. Again we see that Holden has much anger in him. He does not know how to deal with it and that shows he has not grown up. Holden also does not ever figure out his views on sex. At the beginning he hates Stradlater because he takes advantage of girls. He says has never done anything to a girl because he always stops when they say ââ¬Å"stopâ⬠. Holden says that he would have to really like the girlââ¬â¢s face and really get to know the person before he could have sex with them. When Holden gets to New York he calls Faith Cavendish, who he thinks is a stripper. He does not even know her but he wants to have sex with her. This goes against everything he said before. Then when Holden gets to the hotel Maurice offers Holden a hooker and he accepts. Holden then does not do anything with her because he is nervous and it does not seem right to him. Once again Holden is confused about sex. It is a foreign thing to him and he never figures it out. He has ideals that he sets for himself but he never follows through. He even tries to ask Carl Luce, an old friend, about sex but Carl is uncomfortable talking about it and Holden learns nothing new. Holden never learns how to control his emotions and actions about love and sex. Lastly, Holden does not learn how to think out his actions. In the beginning, Holden makes numerous wrong decisions. He runs away from Pencey without even telling his parents he was kicked out. That was a bad decision because when his parents will have found out he would have been in even more trouble for not telling them. Holden also constantly lies to people throughout the book, which shows his immaturity. Later in the book Holden makes some really poor spur of the moment choices too. He scares Sally Hayes, a girl he goes on a date with, by telling her that they should get married and move up north and live in a cabin. He urges her to do it and even raises his voice. Sally cries and says he is crazy. This shows how Holden does not think out his actions, which in turn hurts himself and others. He also spends money without thinking. Holden spends money on taxis, hotel rooms, food, dates, and the nuns. He does not think about managing his money and then he is forced to take his sister Phoebeââ¬â¢s Christmas money. This hurts himself because he does not want to take Phoebeââ¬â¢s money and it also hurts her because she does not have money to buy people presents. Holdenââ¬â¢s lack of thinking hurts himself and others. Lastly, Holden plans to run away to the west and just get away from everyone. He would have done it but Phoebe stops him. Running away would have been really dumb because he didnââ¬â¢t have much money or anywhere to go. Holden never learns to think out his actions and this shows that he does not grow up. In J.D. Salingerââ¬â¢s The Catcher is the Rye, the protagonist Holden Caufield emerges from a trying and emotional series of events and does not grow emotionally but remains as immature as he was at the beginning of the novel. Holden has a violent mind and he thinks about killing people throughout the novel. He also never figures out his views on sex. He thinks he knows his views on sex and what he would do put in certain situations, but he does not follow through with his ideals. Holden also never learns how to think out his decisions. He makes many choices without putting much thought into them and this hurts himself as well as others. Holden Caufield did not emerge from that weekend as a more mature person.

Tax Havens And Its Effects On America - 1322 Words
In addition to allowing corporations to store billions of untaxed dollars, tax havens are also used to support dictators and undemocratic societies. All dictators like Muammar Gaddafi have had billions of dollars stashed in tax havens all around the world. ââ¬Å"Tax havens are also used as the principal route through which laundered money escapes developing countries.â⬠(Palan) The reason tax havens exist, is for the same reason why they existed 50 years ago; to attract money and investments from around the world. When multibillion dollar corporations put billions of dollars in the banking system, it gives the local economy of that country a little boost. That stored in the banks can now be lent out to people to buy homes, cars, or even start aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Corporations have gone far too long without paying taxes. Itââ¬â¢s easy to recognize that the main objective of corporations is to make more profit regardless of how itââ¬â¢s done. This greed brought on by the top companies in the world has cost America $100 billion a year. If these companies would like to take advantage of the biggest market in the world, then they should respect the laws put in place for that country. With that being said, we the people, who buy these products, must make a stand and demand that these companies operate fairly. We know how much money is being lost, where itââ¬â¢s being stashed, and what countries are helping this happen. As the most powerful country in the world we must take a lead and implement new international policies that will make corporate tax evasion something of the past. Even with all these reasons on why corporate tax evasions are bad, there are still some arguments saying that the current tax system is fine as it is. These arguments usually derive from the fear of change. People are scared of the actions that these companies will take in order to counter act the new law set by the government. The main argument comes for allowing tax evasion is that corporate tax evasion makes products cheaper for consumers. While this is a possibility, it also doesnââ¬â¢t make sense. The whole reason corporations evade taxes in the first place, is to make as much profit as possible. So why would these corporations
